The hospital charged for medicines or tests you never received, inflated the bill, or refused an itemised bill. You can challenge the bill before the Consumer Commission.

What you can get

Refund of the excess charges, compensation for the deficiency, and the cost of filing.

Steps

  1. Demand an itemised bill in writing and keep the request and the bill you received.
  2. Mark every charge you dispute and collect proof — prescriptions, test reports, discharge summary.
  3. Register the grievance with the National Consumer Helpline (1915 / consumerhelpline.gov.in).
  4. If unresolved, file on e-Jagriti (e-jagriti.gov.in). The forum is picked by what you paid.
  5. Upload the complaint, affidavit, itemised bill, discharge summary, prescriptions and correspondence as PDFs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hospital a “service provider” under the Consumer Protection Act?
Yes. Medical services are covered, and billing disputes and deficiency in service can be taken to the Consumer Commission.
What if I already paid the full bill under pressure?
Paying does not waive your rights. Keep the payment proof and the itemised bill — you can still claim a refund of the excess.
