Frequently asked questions

Which forum hears my consumer complaint?
It depends on what you paid as consideration: up to ₹50 lakh — District Commission; above ₹50 lakh to ₹2 crore — State Commission; above ₹2 crore — National Commission. The compensation you claim does not decide the forum.
What does it cost to file?
Nothing, if what you paid is up to ₹5 lakh. Above that the fee runs from ₹200 to ₹7,500 depending on what you paid, under the 2020 Rules as amended in 2023.
Do I need a lawyer to file?
No. You can file on e-Jagriti yourself as a party-in-person. The fee is nil for most everyday claims, and the portal walks you through it.
Should I try the National Consumer Helpline first?
Yes. Call 1915 or file at consumerhelpline.gov.in. It is free, and many refunds are settled at this pre-litigation stage within about 30 days. If it does not work, file with the Consumer Commission.
Is this legal advice?
No. This is a free reference tool. Verify every fee and form on the official portal before filing, and consult an advocate for your own facts.
